Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Hola guys!!!!
Harrison Bergeron…well, the author is so futuristic. I’m not quite agreed with the term ‘equal’ that being used in this story. For me, it is true that each person must be treated as equal didn’t care what race are they from and what religion they have practiced (human rights). This story focus on the equivalent of man kind in the future from these aspects: IQ, beauty and even voice. The laws in the future have prohibited man kind to use their talent and gifted beauty in order not to encourage competition among the society. We know from this story that man kind had gone through a dark era where they are contending among them selves to achieve what they have desired. Their minds have been controlled so they do not have the freedom to use their own intelligence and they have to hide their own beauty so that others will not feel envious about it.Honestly, I do not like this story. It is so irrational and can not be accepted by mind. Well, maybe some other crazy ideas might work but not this one…this is only one of human ludicrous imagination. okay..adios |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. i'm posting on the right track..
Well, after referring to the postings, i can actually understand what the story is all about. In my first reading, I can't understand at all. Frankly, i don't like the vision of the future presented in this story. The writer impresses me in term of his creativity and imagination. But in reality, it is not going to happen. It is too ridiculous, don't u think so? Let say if men and women are equal, there is no competition in the world as they have equal intelligence. Without competitive environment, how are we going to improve ourselves? We will be left behind if this kind of situation carries on. In addition, it is unfair to be the person who is talented and competent. We should be thankful to God for giving us such intelligent brain. Even some of us are not as smart as the others. I agree with Rus putih that everyone is born with their own speciality. As long as you know how to make use of them, you are the smartest person. |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Hi neezareena!
I would like to give my two cents worth about your question "Are we free to act as individuals?" Well, I agree with you. Indeed we are not free to act as we like, we have limited freedom as individuals. Actually, kind of think of it, if we are free to do and be as we like, the world will definitely be in turmoil..hehehe What I'm saying is, humans cannot be too free, this is for their good. Without restrictions (reasonable ones, of course ), we might end up destroying ourselves with our freedom Moderation is the key here. We cannot have too little freedom or too much of it either. Like you said we should appreciate what we have today. It is good that we fight for what we want but sometimes, it is better to just sit back and enjoy everything we have right now. Very well said

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Hi,
What a scary and terrifying future. For me, the story is about equality in every human life, but with the help of science and technology to create equality. They would have to wear mental handicap radio, sash weight, bag of birdshot and even mask. Everyone is alike in every way no matter what their sexual category is. The story portrays unpleasant images in future. It is ultramodern but still it is very wacky. Honestly, I don’t really like the future vision that represent in the story. It is too extreme and beyond our imagination. Everyone is alike and should be treated equally but it is too extreme in this story. The advancement of technology has been misused. People have to suffer cruelty for being rebellious. The media is regarded as an influential tool to transmit information with political content which affects the society widely. Individual freedom is greatly restricted in the sense that diversity is unlawful. I can see both reality and absurdity in this short story. The fact that media is influencing our life is a reality that we have to faced. I find it absurd to have such a powerful advancement in technology to create equality. Who on earth think that they need this kind of technology to be equal with other? Maybe, yes, there is people need it, but, are they happen to find happiness and joy of having this kind of live? |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Good morning..
This imaginative story depicts the idea of what it might mean to make sure that everyone is finally equal in the future. What a big issue that we can talk about!! From the story, we can see that, just because of the equality, George has to suffer himself. He needs to carry a forty seven pounds of birdshot in a canvas bag which is padlocked around his neck and he claims that those stuff have become a part of him. What kind of idea is that? It sounds ridiculous to ask a person to carry so much things all over him and I'm sure that I would not like such things to happen on me. I dislike the vision of the future presented in the story. The people has no freedom or rights to voice out. The law that stricted control his people. George does not has the right to take off the stuff on him just because of the law prohibits it.What he can do is to follow the rules and torturing himself. But there are people who cannot stand with the pressures given to them. They will start to defend themselves and act against the rule, just like Harrison. He tries to free himself from the law and does what he thinks that is suit to him.Do not forget that one will try to act against the people who gives so much strees to him or her. What i can see from this story is the absurdity. It sounds ridiculous and unreasonable.People's intelligence, appearance have to be controlled so that nobody is smarter and better looking than others. How can we controll such abstract things that God has created differently among us?Even in the future with those such great technology? It's very unreasonable. The leader who rules the land should not make his people miserable!Don't you think so?? The people should be given the choice of living on their own way and also, the freedom to act as an individual. Not to control the intelligence or beauty of someone, and even to make them equal to each other. How can a land set such rules? It souds cruel and ridiculous. Besides, what can we say about future. No one can predict what will happen tommorrow, not even future.. I'm sure that each of us aim to have better living in the future, and not to controlled by others even with such advanced technology, right? |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Sawadikap sly_ash..
I do agree with your point saying that we cannot be equal in thinking, or even our look. There is a need of competence among people in order to survive. NOT even human, animals do so. Competence make us strive hard to get the things that we want and there is a strong desire to aim for it. If each of us is same from any aspects, then i'm sure there will be no motivation for us to compete..10q. |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Dear Miss Nj_sagier...,
yes, he probably wanted his story to look different in order to capture readers' attention..One more thing i would like to say, perhaps he is not good looking, the jealousy leads him into writing something ridiculous. He is jealous over a person who is good looking than him, smarter than him and so on. Only by this way, he could express all his dissatisfaction. Is it possible? |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Equality. GOD created human to be equal, that's a saying. But how come we are so different?
This is not blasphemy. It may sounds like I am disagreeing with what HE had done. But, I know that HE would never make a mistake. HE created us to be different so that we are equal. We are equal because we are different. Everyone has their strength and weakness. When we live together, then these attributes will complement each other to neutralize the difference, making each of us needs each other. OH Kurt Vornagut Jr, is that what you mean? By forcing equality like in the story actually breakes ballance!
