Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Konnichiwa.........
I'm certainly not a feminist when I say this. Women can never be an equal to men.... Just as men are not equal to women. Men and women can never be equal in the truest sense of the word because for one thing, our physical attributes are already a strong indication that we are different. The way we think...well...for me it does not matter that we are of a different sex to be equal in that. Intelligence wise is also the same. Do we need to be of the different sex to have certain traits? There are male and female savants and anyone can rise up and be a ruler of the world if the person desires to. Like for example, in the science fiction, the United States Handicapper General is a woman named Diana Moon Glampers who actually governs the weird future. Not matter what, as this fiction shows, men and women still cannot be equal. Equality in this sense is simply still a plausible dream to achieve.

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Hola amigos...
Back to the future? I dislike the vision of the future presented in this story because for me, it is too “futuristic” which is absurd for me. The idea of equality in future stated in this story seems irrelevant. Although there are some people out there who fight for equality, we all know that we only can fight for the equality of something common such as human right. It is absurd to have equality for certain aspect such as expertise and intelligence! |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Holla….
Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Harrison wrote this story in 1968, the story was set in the future in the year 2081. Although the story was set in the future, Harrison has a high imagination of what will happen in the future. His vision of a year 2081 was very futuristic. However he can imagine about the future, I think he was over generalize in describing the future. Images of the future emerge in this story is that everybody is equal. Nobody is more than anybody else in all aspects. Such ridiculous things on earth!!. Yes we can be equal with other, but the equality is not under our control. It existing is natural. We can be equal just like our friends but not all things on us are equal. May be our level of thinking same with our friend but the way we thinking are different. That’s make us different from others. I don’t like the vision that brought by Harrison about the future in this story. He is to much in imagine about the future. In the way to make everybody equal is not something good, but actually its gives torchement to every people. I believe if someday in the future, if Harrison imagination become true all people choose to die rather live a life like that (wearing mental handicap radio in the ears and a handicap bag in the neck). What I can see in this story, all the imagination that described by Harrison are absurdity. Nobody wants to live in the situation like that. That’s all..bye |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Sawadikap..
Typically, if someone writes a kind of futuristic story, there should have sophisticated artificial intelligence things such as robots and the robots already have a heart, feelings and senses too. Wonderfully, in Harrison Bergeron, there is a story about equality and their maturity thinking which is over expanded thinking until blocked other’s mind from further thinking. The use of word’ ‘air’ and ‘equal’ seems fighting about national rights in the future. In this story people are equal and fair. Human have no rights and voices anymore. All people in this area are become ‘cold’ and ‘dead’. They start to ignore and ‘noncherish’ the important relationship between humans. Dare to separate the children and parents. To be harsh, everybody become coward and stupid as they keep tailing the nonsensical and cruel laws.I do like the vision no competition against human anymore but only for the irrelevant or inconsequential things and issues. For instance, make-up styles. Human should be self-competitive to improve and motivate ourselves, compete with ourselves and each other to achieve the greatest thing in life with our own ability. If there is no competition against human nobody would come forward and make their life more evocative. The reality is human could improved and modernized a lot in the future but have to be more realistic. I completely would say this story is absurdity because nobody could achieve the super level of thinking; control others’ mind by computer and gadgets. It is exaggerated for humans’ ability.

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Hi pals…
What I have in mind about Harrison Bergeron? Ok, it is a science fiction story and full of sophisticated devices as a core feature to fit the futuristic time setting. As for me in personal, the story is about the losing of FREEDOM in future. The description of the future setting in the story is totally dull. There is NO SUNSET. I dare to say that the FREEDOM IN MEDIA is killing and patterning their lifestyle. There is NO PARENTAL ADVISORY WARNING in the television. The scene where Diana Moon Glampers shooting people without mercy is concerned as an explicit content of the media and should be not exposed in television. Well, this is a futuristic science fiction story. And last but no least, the story is more leaning to absurdity in term of the equality concept. To human like us, equality is a parallelism and the media impact in the story is reality as if what happened in our 21st century setting. Copyright © JENSEN TESL UKM, Inc. All rights reserved. |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. hola normahazira o rosa o elvira...
chingu, i agree with you chingu. this story is ridiculous to me. Equality is good but not for all aspects. Mind aspect is too abstract. The rights for thinking, voicing out opinion and self-appearance could be limited but appropriate with human ability.

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. I think there is more to the story than meets the eye. We have been raving about human equality for years on end, but we have never actually gotten to the point where we can all be equals. Kurt Vonnegut, in my opinion, has just given us an idea of what the world would be like if we were all equals. He is critisizing the very idea of human equality through the story.
What we can see through the story is that uniformity (what the government is doing) leads to the loss of individuality, and to absolute deformity of the human race. Don't let anything or anyone deprive you of your individuality. Otherwise you will lose your humanity as well. People everywhere have been calling out for equality without really thinking about what would happen in the long run. Although the story can be said to be an exeggertion of what would happen if everyone is treated as equals, but there still is some truth in it. If we continue in striving for equality, we could end up like the society in "Harisson Bergeron". |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. bonjour..
reading this story make me think about our new generation future. for me, everybody is created with their own speciality and that makes we what we are, different with the others. the differences which shaping our colourful world, the variety talents who build our beloved nation. these what make we live in these magical new technology. but maybe the vision of the future presented in the story is not possible to happen as today many organisition fight for their equality in the soceity. for certain area, equality do plays an important role but not equality of talents like in the story. |

i really think that you and me have the common idea of the story. i also think that the equality in the the story is to much for our beautiful life. actually the equality like that is not equal at all for human right as we as a human do need a freedom to do what we like as long as we do not break the country law and our religion law . and we do need different expertise and intellegences in our nation in order to build our own country. that's all i guess. |

Re: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. holaa...
First of all, the writer of the story, Kurt Vonnegut is a creative and imaginative person as he can create such story. But frankly i don't really like this story. It is too much for me. This story shows that the future is not really interesting and unpleasant. It is so dramatic that parent can't do anyting about their son as their mind are controlled by electronic devices. Inthis story depicts that people in future are too depend to the technologies and controlled by them.Even the technologies are used to a parent to forget their own son.The technologies have been so cruel.it's like they don't have their own life. And it also cruel if it is happened in reality.. |
