Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? Why literature?Well, truth is it started with my love for watching movies actually. The first movie that really hit me into reading literature work was Pride and Prejudice.I was in love with the beauty of the language. The culture and most definitely the way the man and women dress to the ball.(As shallow as I may sounds,I believe that was really one of the reasons i love watching classic). I remember movies like Lady Jane, A Room With A View, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility very well. These movies took me to the other side of the world that awed me as a growing young girl at that time. As I also love to read, I started to find the books from the movies that I have watched and from there the love for literature just grew in me.The language. That is what makes it special to me.Never really dream off being a literature teacher until the day I got in this program.I know now that it took me more than love for literature to be a good teacher one day.I'm learning now and I hope I'll be able to make my students love literature as much as I do. |

Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? I enjoyed and learnt so much from literature texts that i had my hands on. Sense and Sensibilty, King Lear, Streetcar Named Desire, Tell-Tale Heart, the Yellow Wallpaper, Unicorn in the Garden, Wuthering Heights, the Scarlett Letter are just a small number of it. i wish i can share with my students the same satisfaction and enjoyment that i had when reading all these intriguing texts. Literature is such a good tool to teach students on what life is all about. With the right text and the right method teachers will not only help moulding students to become shcolars but also human that have deep understanding of him/herself and be kind to others as well. i wish i can be the person to do that.

Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? Reading literature texts is for leisure.. When literature is introduced to schools, it actually wants to help create interest among students in reading. Different kind of texts are introduced, however not all texts suit the students' favorite. For instance, there are text that i don't understand the culture of the story written, eventually i start to shut down my interest in reading the texts. Reading or studying literature text should be pressure free.
Most of the time, i would flip through or read through a literary text in whatever form when i have free time. I realise that through reading texts helps to imporve my language. Literary text also helps to widen my knowledge in various aspect. Besides that, there are literary texts that contained moral values. Thus thorugh reading. it is indirectly instill in me the moral values. |

Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? Well, why? I want to study literature because I love English and I love stories. I read a lot since I was a little girl and I had finish all the secondary school literature components when I was in primary school(I nipped them from my bro's school bag as I ran out of storybooks). Furthermore, I love classics. The language is...how can I put it? I should say, magical.

Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? Let me start one by one. When I was in school, I studied literature because I had to. I suppose the texts prescribed to us were alright, considering that my father introduced me to Penguin's Classics when I was in primary school. So, I had not much trouble understanding the texts. However, it was the presentation by the teachers that bored me to death. It was either chalk and talk, or we read the text in class and answer some dull questions that puts me to sleep. Hence, i did not have much fond memories of studying literature in school.
Then, I read literature because I love to read. And by reading English literature I feel like I am immersed in the culture as well. That is definitely a plus point for a teenager stuck in Malaysia like me, and I am sure for many others as well. Now, I want to teach literature because I wish to prevent the teenagers in school to stop having the same negative feelings for literature that I used to have for literature. Literature can be fun! Provided that it is taught like how we learnt and are learning to teach in the university. I do not want my students to struggle just to stay awake in my class. So, I want to teach literature so that they can enjoy literature, just like i am now. |

Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? I have always enjoyed reading literature especially foreign works to experience a whole different culture. When i was a student i was interested to take up literature for spm. However, due to the class arrangement, all the smart students were placed in science classes while the art classes were seen as the lower classes. The students who were in the art classes were mostly students who were not interested in their studies. Due to this system, even though i had the interest to study literature for my spm, i wasn't given the choice due to the education system in some of the schools here.

Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? hello...everyone!!!!
well.... personally..i really love english.. so when i learnt literature in school...i found out that the teachers do not know how to tackle the students and make the lesson interesting. i still remember that my literature period was always dull and i usually lost in spaxce.. the teacher only asked us to read and understand the story and when she taught in class, she only highlighted the main issues such as the themes, plot, literary devices and etc..thus, she used the revision books sold in bookshops..such as baby steps and what so ever... so from this terrible experiences...i think i should be an enlighten english teacher and try my best to change the students' perceptions towards learning literature!!! |

Re: WHY DO YOU WANT TO TEACH/STUDY/READ LITERATURE? English is something I'm passionate about and Literature is one of them. I often make a habit to read literary classics (currently reading Frankenstein) and I've developed an interest in Literature components for PMR and SPM. This year, I'm taking Literature in English for SPM and I hope, by joining this forum, it increases my views and knowledge on the short stories, poems, drama (An Inspector Calls) and novel (Holes) in the syllabus. What other reason is there to enjoy the beauty and eccentricity of English? I think Literature does just that.
