MELTA is currently administering the following research projects :
Developing a Model to Establish English Language Standards for Malaysian Teachers : A Continuum Approach from Second Language to First Language Competency Levels
This research project aims to establish ways in which English Language Standards for Malaysian Teachers can be measured against a continuum that ranges from Second Language to First Language Competency levels. It will subsequently develop a baseline tool that enables the measurement of professional competency levels of the Malaysian teacher in a localized context, based on the fundamental aspects of the Malaysian Teacher Standards document (Standard Guru Malaysia or SGM).
ELT Online Platforms: A Study of the Factors that Contribute to the Effectiveness of the MELTA Special Interest Groups
This research project aims to investigate the factors that contribute to the effectiveness of online forums as a useful teaching and learning resource. Its research corpus was the MELTA SIG online forums. These forums have been an online platform for Malaysian ELT practitioners, learners and language enthusiasts to exchange views and ideas in relation to the teaching and learning of the English language. The focus of the research was on investigating the participation of users in a selected discussion thread as well as their responses to a questionnaire based on the following dimensions of the pedagogical usability of the online platform, namelylearner activity (LA), cooperative/collaborative learning (CCL), goal orientation (GO), applicability of contents to users (AP) and added value for teaching and learning as adapted from Nokelainen (2006).
