Practices and Issues in English Language Teacher Development covers the current practices and issues that concern English language teachers and their development as professionals. These practices entail issues that are very much pertinent to the fundamental elements of teacher development such as communities of practices, assessment for training inventions, in-service training (INSET) programmes, the meaning of becoming an English Language Teacher, policies related to teacher development and teacher identity. Local and international academics featured in this book examine, argue and suggest new ways, new practices in the process of enhancing ones’ professionalism this is done by approaching various issues that may hinder teachers’ development using strategies such as use of films in classrooms, creating an online platform to discover self, scrutinizing less meaningful INSET programmes, and building a community of learning teachers. All these strategies have immense potential in enhancing ones’ development as a professional English language teacher and are dealt with this book.
Editors
Muhammad Kamarul Kabilan holds a PhD and trains English Language teacher at School of Educational Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia. He has presented numerous academic papers relating to English language education at various international conferences. He has also published in the same field in various international journals. His main research interests are the use of Internet for ELT, professional development of English language teachers and creative and critical practice in ELT.
Editors
Malachi Edwin Vethamani is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Educational Studies, University Putra Malaysia. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in English Literature and Master in Education in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from University of Malaya and a doctorate in Literature in English from the University of Nottingham, England. He is a recipient of the Chevening Award (1993-1996) and the Fulbright Scholarship (2000). He was a President of the Malaysia English Language Teaching Association (MELTA) from June 2001 till January 2008. he is currently Vice President of the Asian Association of Teacher of English as a Foreign Language (Asia TEFL). His areas of specialization are teaching literature, teacher development and use of computer meditated applications in ELT.
